Activating Prior Knowledge
Prior knowledge is a unique set of knowledge that each individual person brings into their reading, writing, math etc. Knowledge can be: - What you know already about the reading process. - Vocabulary knowledge - Topic knowledge - Concept knowledge - Text types or genres and the language features of these
How does activating prior knowledge support reading comprehension? - By activating their prior knowledge, you are able to connect with what you already know. This is a good base to start with.
To help you activate your prior knowledge, these are some questions you can ask yourself before, during or after you are reading a text.
There are many ways to activate your prior knowledge, and today, you will use a Before and After Web.
1. Put the topic we are learning about in the centre box. 2. Fill in the inner circle all the information you know about Honey Bees. 3. Read the text you have been given. 4. Fill in the outer circle with new knowledge 5. In Kagan group, share your before and after wheel.

Thursday 13th Feb 2014 - Whole class activity
Today the children learnt how to use context cues to work out unknown words and actively reading for meaning. The children were given a cloze reading activity to do with the beach and they had to find the best word to fit into the missing space. Everyone was on task and were able to use context cues to work out the best word to fit into the space.
